With more than one million visitors as of 2006, the Woodland Park Zoo hosts more than 1000 animal specimens, 300 animal species, 35 endangered and threatened species, 7000 trees, 50000 shrubs and herbs, as well as 1000 plant species.

The Woodland Park Zoo has a lot of exhibits that feature the natural diversity of plants and animals. The Tropical Rainforest, which won a Best Exhibit award in 1992, features a gamut of animals from Central and South America, such as poison arrow frogs, toucans, monkeys, and lemurs. The Tropical Asia exhibit, which was opened in 1990, features elephants, macaques, pythons and orangutans. The Northern Trail brings visitors to tundra habitat, and has animals normally found in Alaska. Its African Savannah has a large collection of hippos and monkeys, as well as plants found in the region. Its Australasian exhibit feature rare animals like kookaburras, kangaroos, among others. Its Temperate Forests have marshland which hosts animals such as ducks and herons.
The Woodland Park Zoo opens everyday at 9:30 AM and closes at 4:00 PM. Admission rates vary throughout the year, although children under two are admitted for free.
