Washington Park Arboretum

For tourists exploring the city, travels in Seattle are not just limited to man-made landmarks such as the Smith Tower or the familiar Space Needle. Seattle travel guides also highly recommend an exploration of the city's natural landscape, such as the Washington Park Arboretum.

A picturesque 230-acre (about 0.8 square kilometers) area located in the city of Seattle, Washington Park Arboretum is a collection of rare and beautiful trees, shrubs and other vegetation. A natural preserve, and an official State Arboretum, the park hosts the continent's largest collection of Horbus and Maples, as well as hollies, oaks, conifers and camellias. The Washington Park Arboretum contains more than 40000 different trees, of which 139 are endangered species. Almost all of the Washington Park Arboretum collection (about 95%) is open to the public year round.

Found upon Lake Washington, the Arboretum is home to the Japanese Garden with a traditional Tea House. The University Boat House has kayak renting and boating facilities. The Joseph Witt Winter Garden, on the other hand, hosts many cold-weather plants. Red twig dogwoods, evergreens and deciduous hollies flank the park during winter, and is a treat to travelers and plant enthusiasts.

A great site for family and group trips, the Washington Park Arboretum can host picnics or games. Maintained by the University of Washington, as well as an army of volunteers, they also organize musical and cultural performances, guided arboretum tours, as well as other events that showcase the area's natural beauty. A great work of conservation, the Washington Park Arboretum is an important preserve for today and future generations.
