When the Smith tower opened in July, 1914 it was also the fourth tallest building in the world. The building weighed a massive 48,650 tons. In 1999, after obtaining necessary approvals, the Smith Tower underwent significant remodelling at a cost of $28 million (close to 20 times the original cost) Heating is now achieved through forced air heat, and air conditioning has been provided. Telecommunication needs are met through fiber optic network running through a closed elevator shaft. Several other modifications have been made to the building including fire escape, electrical, security and the like.
