When the Smith tower opened in July, 1914 it was also the fourth tallest building in the world. The building weighed a massive 48,650 tons. For almost it also remained the tallest building on the western part of the Mississippi river for nearly 50 years. The Smith tower has 42 floors and the total height of the building is 522 feet. Originally, the tower sported 250,000 square feet floor space on 12,160 square feet ground space. At the time it was constructed the total cost of construction amounted to $1,500,000.00 dollars. The smith tower has 2314 windows all of which are encased in frames made of bronze. The original glass which was fixed in 1914 still remains in most of them. In 1999, after obtaining necessary approvals, the Smith Tower underwent significant remodelling at a cost of $28 million (close to 20 times the original cost) Heating is now achieved through forced air heat, and air conditioning has been provided. Telecommunication needs are met through fiber optic network running through a closed elevator shaft. Several other modifications have been made to the building including fire escape, electrical, security and the like.
