Seattle Culture

Seattle is the most populous city in Washington. It gets its name from Chief Sealth of the Suquamish and Duwamish tribes. The Seattle Tacoma Bellevue metropolitan is the largest statistical area in the Pacific Northwest and the 15th largest in the US. Seattle is a coastal city and one of United States major seaports.

The city is located on the western part of Washington and is 96 miles south of the United States and Canada border. It is a major economic and cultural area. The city has a municipal population of 594,210 and a metropolitan area population of 326,3497 this is according to the 2007 census.

The Seattle region has been inhabited at least for the last four thousand years however European settlers began to arrive in the mid nineteenth century. The earlier settlements in the area, according to the Seattle travel guide, were called Duwamps and New York-Alki that meant by and by in the local Chinook Jargon.

This was before the name was changed to "Seattle" the anglicized version of the name of the chief of the two tribes. Seattle was known as the queen city from 1869 until1982; its current nickname is the emerald city as a result of the lush green trees in the area. It's also referred to as the gateway to Alaska, jet city, rain city. The residents of Seattle are called Seattleite.

Seattle is known for heavy coffee consumption. The coffee companies in Seattle include Tullys, Seattle's Best Coffee and Starbucks. The town also has many successful independent roasters and coffee cafes. So make sure you prepare to have coffee when you do your Seattle traveling.

In 2005 and in 2006 Seattle was ranked as the most literate city among America's sixty nine largest cities and then the second largest in 2007 after Minneapolis and then the two cities tied in 2008. An additional survey of the US Census Bureau indicated that Seattle is the most educated city in United States with over 52% of its residents who are aged above 25 years having a bachelor's degree.
