The art walk originates from 1981 when a group of Pioneer Square art dealers printed maps, conducted minor promotions and on the first Thursday of the month painted footprints on the sidewalk outside their galleries. This soon developed into a favored fixture on the locals' arts calendar. Since then the first Thursday takes place each month from noon to 8pm at the pioneer square neighborhood. The art walk features leading art galleries who introduce into the scene new artists and exhibits.
