The 20-foot-by40-foot acrylic window already weighs more than 55,000 pounds and is over a little more than a foot thick. It was modeled after Washington's Neah Bay with colorful rockfish, salmon, sea anemones and divers take into the water at least thrice a day on this exhibit. Another exhibit which opened back in 2002 is the Life on the Edge where visitors explore the tidepool life of Seattle's inland sea and the outer coast of Washington while seeing sunflower sea stars and aggregating anemones. There are two pools that showcase touch zones placed there by naturalists and replaced the traditional aquarium tanks that used to occupy the Pier 59 building. Through video screens, the lifestyles of the unique creatures living in the harsh conditions of the tidal zones are shown to visitors.
The Coral Reef which features various creatures living in the Pacific Coral Reef has a 25,000 gallon community tank. It demonstrates how a reef fish community is structured, while multitude of sharks as well as warm water fishes swim through the man-made coral reef. At times, visitors can see divers feed these fish.
You will also discover while walking around the display tank the reef's deeper portions where other habitats exist in one coral reef. Every depth contains an assortment of creatures living along the reef.
