For tourists and locals alike, Pioneer Square is their favorite gathering place since they can find quite an assortment of characters here.

Pioneer Square is kind of characterized by its late 19th century brick and stone buildings. The Romanesque Revival style urban architectures are the best surviving collections in the country. Some other highlights of the historic district are Pioneer Place Park, Occidental Park, Klondike Gold Rush National Park, Waterfall Garden Park, First Thursday and others. During the popular Seattle Underground Tour, tourists can visit the eerie sunken storefronts caused by the Great Fire of 1889. And you can expect far more from Pioneer Square which is a reminder of the history of Seattle.

Pioneer Square is nestled in the southwest corner of Downtown Seattle. The neighborhood is named after a small triangular plaza known as Pioneer Place which can be found near the corner of First Avenue and Yesler Way. Pioneer Square was once the heart of Seattle. In 1889, the Great Seattle Fire destroyed almost all the early wooden structures. As a result, heaps of brick and stone buildings have been constructed by the end of 1890. Today these late 19th century buildings have become the iconic character of Pioneer Square.

Pioneer Square is bordered roughly by Alaskan Way S. on the west, 5th Avenue S. on the east, S. King Street on the south and extends north to Yesler Way. The Pioneer Square-Skid Road Historic District including the plaza and its surrounding blocks has been listed on the National Register of Historic Places. New to Seattle and have no idea how to reach Pioneer Square? As a landmark of the city, Pioneer Square is quite easy to find. Yet it involves some twists and turns which might be difficult for newcomers. To make your trip hassle-free, we'd like to offer you some suggestions.

From SeaTac Airport

After landing on SeaTac Airport, you can approach to the ST Light Rail & SeaTac Airport Station which is approximately 0.3 miles northeast of the airport. Then get to downtown Seattle by taking the Route MT Central Link. Get off the light rail at the Pioneer Square Tunnel Bay A. Make a right turn onto the Pedestrian Walk. Take Pedestrian Walk southwest and bear right onto Yesler Way. Pioneer Square is just south of Yesler Way.

From the North

For visitors coming from the University of Washington, Edmonds, Everett, Canada or any place north of Seattle, you should merge onto Interstate 5 and take it south in the first place. Then exit 165A, James Street Exit. Make a right turn onto James Street. At 1st Avenue, James Street will merge with Yesler Way. Pioneer Square is just south of Yesler Way.

From the South

For visitors coming from Seattle-Tacoma International Airport, Tacoma, Portland area or any place south of Seattle, you can merge onto Interstate 5 and take it north in the first place. Then exit 165A, James Street Exit and make a right turn onto James Street. Get onto Yesler Way at the 1st Avenue where James Street merges with Yesler Way. Pioneer Square is just south of Yesler Way.

From the East

For visitors coming from Mercer Island / Bellevue, Spokane and Boise area or other place east of Seattle, you can get onto Interstate 5 by taking Interstate 90 first. Then follow signs to Seattle. Don't forget to exit 165, James Street exit. Make a left turn onto James Street which will merge with Yesler Way at 1st Avenue. Bear right onto Yesler Way. Pioneer Square is just south of Yesler Way.
