The Museum of History and Industry differs from other Seattle institutions by focusing on the different eras of the city and region's industrial history. The Museum's permanent exhibits feature themes such as "This Native Land" (1792-1859), which describes the area's native settlement and eventual colonization, and "Little Town on Elliott Bay (1859-1889), which describes the early times of the city, as well as the Great Seattle Fire of 1889.

It further expands into "Boom Times, Hard Times" (1889-1940), a collection dedicated to the western gold rush, the Alaska-Yukon-Pacific Expedition and the Great Depression, and "Homefront" (1940-1945), Seattle's experience during the Second World War. Its present-day exhibit, "Our Own City" (1946-present), covers the American Civil Rights Movement and the rise of industries in the Seattle area.
