Monorail

The Seattle Center Monorail is an elevated monorail line in Seattle. It runs over one mile along Fifth Avenue from Westlake Center in downtown Seattle to Seattle Center in Lower Queen Anne. It is the only fully self-sufficient public transit system in United States. Its top speed is 45 mph, therefore making it the fastest full-sized monorail in country. It is owned by the City of Seattle and the line has been operated by a private contractor, Seattle Monorail Services, since 1994. The monorail trains and their tracks were given historical landmark status by the Seattle Landmarks Preservation Board since April 16, 2003. Seattle Monorail Schedule Info

The Seattle Monorail is the city's new and modern rail system that provides a quick link between the Seattle Center and Seattle's Downtown area.

The daily hours of operation of the monorail are between 9:00am and 11:00pm everyday of the week including Sundays.

The Seattle Monorail departs from its station in Seattle Center every ten minutes. It is located across the Seattle Space Needle. It also departs from the station located at Westlake Center Mall at Pine and Fifth Street. The monorail can carry 200 passengers and takes 2 minutes to complete the one-mile road.

The Seattle Center Monorail is not only a mode of transportation in Seattle but is also a thing of interest. It is an elevated monorail line and transport people from the Fifth Avenue from Westlake Center to Lower Queen Anne. The train operates from 9 in the morning until 7 pm everyday. More than a mode of transport, the Seattle Center Monorail has also been an icon of Seattle. It was also built in the celebration of the 1962 World's Fair. The train is not owned by the government of Seattle but is a privately run business operated by Tom Albro. The Seattle Center Monorail is only the fully independent transportation system for the public and the only full-size monorail in the entire US. This transport machine is powered by 750 Hp DC motors on 700 volts.

What are the rates?

The Seattle Center Monorail offers round trip transport for only $4 for adults. Youth ages 5 to 12 are charged $1.50. Senior citizens who are 65 and above are charged $2. Children who are under 4 years old are offered free rides. One way rates are half the price of the round trip rates. You can also take advantage of monthly passes for the monorail which is priced at $40 per month on regular rate for adults and $10 on special rates. Group discounts are also offered for school trips with rates that can go as low as $0.75 per rider.

History of Seattle Monorail

The Seattle Center Monorail is opened to the public in March 24, 1962 in celebration of the Century 21 Exposition of the World Fair. Annually, the riders who use the monorail are more than 2.5 million.
