Sharing the Diverse History of Seattle - Visitors Guide to MOHAI

If you think that MOHAI is a particularly peculiar name, then you must know that MOHAI is an acronym for Museum of History and Industry. This museum is located in Montlake, Seattle. Accredited by American Association of Museums, the purpose of this museum is to demonstrate and preserve the rich history of this region.

About a century old, this museum has a curious past. The Carteek family once hosted a Founder's Day party at their home. The dress code of the party was historical and ethnic costumes. Inspired by this social gathering where one could catch glimpses of lost history, Seattle Historical Society was formed in 1914.

After a generous donation by Boeing in 1945, this society procured its site in Montlake and today we know this place as MOHAI. Since its beginning it has been a roller coaster ride for MOHAI, but the wide reach and community involvement of this museum cannot be ignored.

Today the museum hosts many programs for social development and welfare. With an impressive turnout of about 60,000 visitors per year the museum is surely generating good vibes. The exhibits of the museum will take you on the journey of development in Seattle and surrounding areas.

One of the very famous exhibits in the museum is all about salmon fishing and industry in the region. Another exhibit is of the first model built by Boeing. For historical buffs and lovers of art this museum is not to be missed.

History of MOHAI

MOHAI's history dates back 1911 when Emily and Morgan Carkeek held a Founder's Day Party right in their home and invited special guests to dress up in historical costumes and bring with them artifacts, photos and other documents pertaining to the early Seattle. As more and more Founder's Day parties were held, the historical collection grew which encouraged the guests to pioneer the Seattle Historical Society in 1914.

The amount of historical treasures grew but the group lacks a permanent location to showcase their collection. Finally, in 1945, the group sold a $50,000 worth of aviation wing to Boeing, of which the profit was used to procure the present location of the MOHAI in Montlake in Seattle. By 1952, the new museum of MOHAI opened its door to the public.
