Intro to Discovery Park Seattle

The discovery park in Seattle is a 534 acre facility located in the Magnolia neighborhood of the city. It is also the city's largest pubic park with 11.81 miles of walking trails. A sewage treatment plant is housed on the south of the North beach strip but is fully concealed from the trail, beach and the marsh. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Discovery_Park_(Seattle) provides a great overview of the park.

Discovery Park is among the best places in Seattle when you enjoy viewing wildlife, particularly bird species and marine mammals. The park is home for over 162 species of wild birds. The Elliott and Shilshole bays play host to California sea lions, harbor seals, and in the woods you will find Townsend's chipmunks.

Most visitors are fascinated towards hiking along the Loop Trail which provides outstanding view of Puget Sound while affording an engaging experience because of the topsy turvy terrain. The shoreline can be accessed by rail or road and if you plan to hike back from the north beach, understand that it can be challenging, if not difficult. The visitor center and the parking lots are also surrounded by plenty of greenery in the form of shrubs and small trees. The tree cover in the park is largely made up of Douglas-fir, red alder, western red cedar, and big leaf maple. Scotch broom and English ivy are the invasive species which are constantly managed to keep them suppressed and under check.
