Georgetown

If you're looking for the last outpost of a blue-collar, bohemian arts culture in Seattle then you should travel in Seattle. In the late 1990's artisans and artists who were displaced were attracted by the inexpensive rents and decided to move to Georgetown to open Vespa repair shops, open tile words and glass blowing studios. These were followed by coffee shops, bars and restaurants.

People began to settle in Georgetown when Luther Collins staked his claim on September 16, 1851 but it was Julius Horton who named it after his son forty years later. One of the largest brewery in the world, Rainier Brewery now known as Georgetown Brewhouse began its operations here in 1882.Currently, the brewhouse is home to small businesses, and artists who still dominate the commercial district on Airport Way S.

Georgetown became an independent city from 1904 to 1910 however, it was annexed by Seattle on April 4, 1910 and the Old Georgetown City Hall has been registered as the Georgetown Steam Plant on the National Register of Historic Places.

When you travel to Seattle WA, you will discover that things didn't go forward or backward in Georgetown. In fact it has remained the same for decades while the city around it gradually changed with the dot-com boom.

But things are about to change because on Jan. 20, Seattle plans to reveal a public space downtown that is unlike any other in North America. This is destined to become as much as the Olympic Sculpture Park in Chicago. The public place which Seattle intends to unveil is a nine-acre expanse with sweeping views of Elliott Bay and the Olympic Mountains. It also has a Z-shaped walkway to a restored beachfront and passing by permanent sculptures.
