Carkeek Park Seattle
The Carkeek Park sports an adjoining beach and is among the larger urban parks in Seattle. Maintenance of the park is in the hands of the 'active citizen group Friends of the Carkeek Park'. The Chum Salmon in Pipers' Creek was introduced by the group and represents a stream flowing through the park and receiving substantial drainage from the abutting urban areas. Exhaustive information of the park can be gleaned from http://www.kingcounty.gov/environment/waterandland/puget-sound-marine/beaches/carkeek.aspx
56species of invertebrates have been identified on the beach which is the highest for beaches surveyed under the particular study. The larger number of species identified is perhaps attributable to the rigorous sampling methods employed. The Carkeek Park is a great place for families, particularly when kids are accompanying. The large play area appears packed always with kids while the families stroll around on the beach. Children do enjoy exploring, building and playing and the park can be a great escape from the controlled environments for city dwellers.
The short trails in the park are wonderful and some of them offer a climb. On the east side of the park, one can also find an environmental learning centre which is open on all week days.
