Among the many museums of the city, Burke Museum of Natural History and Culture stands out.

A Washington state museum since 1899, the Burke Museum of Natural History and Culture is located at the University of Washington campus. As the only natural history museum in the Pacific Northwest, and the State of Washington's oldest museum, the Burke Museum features more than 12 million artifacts and specimens, having dinosaur fossils, gemstones and even totem poles in its possession.

The museum hosts millions of specimens from its anthropology, biology, and geology research divisions. The many highlights of the Burke Museum include the world's fifth largest collection of Pacific Northwest and Native Alaskan Art, the world's largest collection of spread bird wings, the world's second largest collection of frozen bird tissue for genetics and other biological research, Northwest plants, fungi and millions of archeological artifacts from the Puget Sound and the Columbia River.

Three long-term exhibits are featured in the Burke Museum - "The Life and Times of Washington State" (a natural history of the region), "Pacific Voices" (an anthropological exploration of the different peoples of the Pacific), and "Treasures of the Burke" (the museum's geological collection).

The museum opens at 10 AM everyday, and closes at 5 PM. On the first Thursday of every month, the museum opens until 8 PM, and admission is free. It is closed during major holidays such as Christmas and New Year.

Museum closes at 3 p.m. on December 24 and December 31.
