Originally called "Greenish-Yellow Spine" by its natives, who named it from the deciduous trees that grew in the area, Beacon Hill was first settled in the mid-nineteenth century by settlers John Holgate and Edward Hanford. Consequently, Beacon Hill was originally named as Holgate and Hanford Hill in honor of these first settlers. Over time, its name was changed to Beacon Hill by M. Harwood Young, who renamed it in honor of his original hometown in Boston, Massachusetts.

The 20th century saw a rise in the immigrant population of the town. At the present, Beacon Hill hosts a mix of Asian (mainly Filipino and Chinese), Latin, black and white inhabitants. Its cultural landmarks feature the diversity of the area, with places such as the former Pacific Medical Center, Jefferson Park, Dr. Jose Rizal Park (in honor of the Philippine national hero), El Centro de la Raza, as well as the Beacon Hill branch of the Seattle Public Library.
